Breast Implant Size
Breast implants come in a variety of sizes. Selecting the proper size is critical to ensure long-term satisfaction with your breast implants. Dr. Shenker and his staff will help you decide on the best size of implant to meet your goals.

Breast Implant Shape
Some breast implants give the breast a more rounded appearance, while others create a breast shaped with a gentle slope and fullness in the lower portion of the breast.

Breast Implant Filler
There are two approved options for breast implant fillers; silicone and saline. While each filler has been approved by Health Canada for breast implants, each has distinct features and benefits.

Silicone - The unique qualities of today’s silicone gel-filled breast implants make it the filler of choice for patients in countries where both silicone gel-filled and saline-filled breast implants are widely available. Silicone gel-filled implants are available in a range of cohesivity, from very soft to more firm, so you can choose the option that you prefer. Today’s cohesive silicone gel implants have eliminated the problems encountered with the silicone implants of the past.

Saline - Some patients prefer the look and feel that can be achieved with saline-filled breast implants. Saline implants use a silicone shell that is inserted into the breast and then filled with sterile saline, a saltwater solution, through a valve. The size of the implant shell, as well as the amount of saline that is used to fill it, is what determines the look and level of softness.

Breast Implant Surface Texturing
Breast Implants can be either smooth or textured. Texturing is designed to help keep the breast implant from shifting in place and to reduce the rate of capsular contracture, but is not recommended for every body type.

About breast augmentation
Breast augmentation, or breast enhancement surgery, is one of the most popular and aesthetically dramatic procedures performed by Dr. Shenker at The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic in Waterloo, Ontario.

There are many reasons that a woman may choose breast augmentation. A woman may feel her breasts are too small, or note that there is a size difference between her breasts. Breasts may change in size following pregnancy, breast-feeding, or weight loss.

You will first have a thorough consultation with Dr. Shenker to determine your goals and preferences for your breast augmentation. Dr. Shenker’s Patient Coordinator will guide you through all the details of the planning process for your procedure, including financing, scheduling, and paperwork.

Aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs can cause increased bleeding, so you should avoid taking these medications for a period of time before surgery. If you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop smoking well in advance of surgery.

How is breast augmentation surgery performed?
While under a general anesthetic, the smallest possible incision is made in the crease under the breast, around the areola, or within the armpit. A space is created either above or below the chest muscle. The implant is carefully placed in this space and your incision is closed with dissolving stitches that do not need to be removed.

In some instances you may have a support bra that you will need to wear for a short period of time after surgery. There will be some swelling initially, but this will disappear quickly. You will return to The Cosmetic Surgery Clinic for a follow up appointment within a few days. Most residual swelling will resolve within one month after the procedure.

When can I resume normal activities?
It is not unusual for breast augmentation patients to resume normal activities, such as driving, showering, cooking, or shopping, within one to two days after surgery. Exercise and physically demanding jobs may be resumed three to six weeks after surgery.

Results of your breast augmentation
Breast augmentation will result in your breasts being fuller and having an enhanced shape. Clothes may fit better and most women experience a boost in their self-confidence.

How long will the results last?
The results of breast augmentation are long lasting. However, gravity and the effects of ageing will eventually alter the size and shape of every woman’s breasts. If, after time, you become dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts, you may choose to undergo a breast lift to restore their youthful contour.

Frequently Asked Questions about
Breast Implants & Breast Augmentation

What is the best size for me?
The way I determine your best size is by examining your chest and breast anatomy and by having you meet with my patient care consultant to use a series of breast implant sizers. After you have narrowed your choices to just a few options and you have decided what size you want to be, we will meet again to make sure that your choice is realistic and technically possible.

What kind of implants do you use?
I have experience with all types of breast implants that are available in North America, including saline, silicone, and the newest type of anatomically shaped cohesive silicone gel. The type of implant that I use in each breast surgery will depend on that patient's body type and her desired cosmetic result.

Will I ever have to have the implant removed/replaced?
There is no sure way to know if you will ever need to have your implants removed. In the absence of any complications, many women never need to have the implants removed. There is no pre-determined time at which breast implants need to be removed or changed.

Which incision is best?
The choice of incision will depend on the size of your breast and the type of breast implant you choose. There is certainly no “best” breast surgery incision site.

How much do breast implants cost?

What about breast implants scars?

Will I have changes in sensation?
While healing from breast surgery, you may feel numb, or overly sensitive, or both. This usually resolves with time. The majority of women get sensation back in a relatively short period of time. Your sensation after surgery may be the same as it was prior to surgery, or you may be more sensitive or less sensitive. It is impossible to predict exactly how your body will react to breast augmentation surgery.

Dr. Robert L. Shenker - My Approach to Breast Augmentation

My philosophy with respect to cosmetic surgery is to provide safe, subtle, and satisfying results that will help patients look, feel, and be their best. I offer safe, research-proven aesthetic enhancements for people who want to discover their natural radiance without compromising good health. Breast augmentation surgery provides physical and aesthetic benefits that enhance patient confidence and self image.

During an initial consultation, I listen to your concerns about your appearance and then work with you to address those concerns. After I examine you, I will then take the time to describe your options in detail. If we agree that a surgical procedure is appropriate, I will show you drawings and photographs of the operation. I may even draw the proposed operative markings on your body so that you can see exactly where any scars will be. You will also have a chance to talk to my patient care coordinator to review details of the pre- and post-operative processes. She will help guide you through the details you need to know to make sure you are fully prepared for your operation.

I know that the decision to pursue breast implants can be a complex one. This decision should seldom be made at the time of the initial consultation. I encourage you to reflect on our discussions in the comfort of your own home. I will send you a letter detailing the various options we have discussed so that you will have all the information you need from me, plenty of time to consider all your options, and the opportunity to discuss it with your family and friends if you choose to. You will be able to contact some of my patients who have undergone similar procedures. They would be happy to talk to you about their experiences under my care. For those who decide to go ahead with surgery, or for those who simply have more questions, a second visit will be scheduled to review the plan and answer your questions.

I believe that my relationship with each patient is unique. If you choose to undergo breast augmentation surgery or other procedures with me, you will be embarking on a long-term relationship during which I will continue to care for your appearance and your health for as long as you need me. After surgery, I will continue to see you for routine follow-up visits for as long as you care to return.
